WOMEN ON WAVES IN POLAND. CALENDARY OF EVENTS. (based on www.oska.org) 22/06/2003 The action got started. The ship hired by Women on Waves Foundation came to Poland. It was held in Gdynia for controls. Than it appeared, that the polish port crew was against the action, and so at least a part of controls and the time wasted in Gdynia were not needed. 23/06/2003 The pro - choice exhibition in Władysławowo is banned from the city hall, where it was to be shown. The controls say the ship is in good state, so it can go to Władysławowo, the planned destination. The custom officers made sure, that none of the medicaments that are illegal in Poland (means basically the abortion - pills) will be used. 24/06/2003 A Press conference on the women's right to decide was held in Władysławowo. The church's officials declare the WoW's action illegal, some journalists, professors, women and ngo's support it. The women network "Porozumienie Kobiet 8 Marca" distributes a letter of support for WoW action, it is signed by more than 600 people during 4 days. The boss of the port in Władysławowo declares that the ship cannot leave the port without further controls. Some members of the Parliament declare the controls illegal. 25/06/03 Press is invited to visit the ship - clinic. The Polish procurer declares, that until the medicaments that are illegal in Poland wont be distributed in the polish territory, there is no offence of the polish law. Langenort is sentenced to pay 12 000 PLN for leaving the port in Gdynia without permission. The crew of the ship declares, that the money will be paid, but they also will apply to the supreme court. A demonstration in support of the action is held in Gdansk, the biggest city in the region. 26/06/03 A research made in Poland reveals, that most of the polish people are for the compromise in the question of abortion, but 23% has no precise opinion in this issue. Only 9% of the population is definitely pro - choice, and about 27% - holds definitely pro - life positions. 41% want the foetus to be legally secured and women to have right to abortion access in the same time. At 3 p. m. Langenort went to the international waters. The polish procurers declare, that there were no reasons for arresting anyone from the group involved in WoW action till now. 27/06/03 About 400 posters saying: "when abortion is illegal, monsters are born" (with pictures of Hitler, Stalin, and some polish politics) appear in Poznan. This is also a support for the WoW action. A demonstration in support of the Wow action takes place in Wrocław. The Coalition of Catholic Women declares, that the WoW act against the Polish women, who already have their tradition and family and do not need anything more. 28/06/03 A solidarity picket with WoW is organised in Warsaw. Many people sign the petition to support the feminists, but than noone from the Ministry of Education, near to which the demo takes place, wants to take it in. 29/06/2003 "Langenort" goes to international waters again, and again there are some abortion - pills missing. 30/06/03 The police starts to interview the crew of the ship. The second press - conference is held by the Women on Waves in Władysławowo. 01/07/2003 Open day on Langenort From 11 a.m. till 4 p. m. the ship clinic was opened for public. There came about 200 visitors, mostly women, some of them with kids. They often declared support for WoW in general and also for the project done in Poland. 02/06/03 The Dutch Parliamentarists declare support for the WoW's action in Poland. There is a different atosphere in Władysławowo, where the city hall declares negative opinion on the action. 04/06/03 The Women on Waves leave Poland. Rebecca Gomperts, the leader of the foundation says: The clinic on ship is leaving, but the problems, that polish women have with the right to decide on their own lives - stays in Poland. We will maybe come back!
